A busy Wiltshire town centre road is set to close to drivers for over two weeks during roadworks.

St Mary Street in Chippenham will shut to motorists from April 16 until May 3 while Wiltshire Council carries out footway slab replacements and other associated works.

During this time the road will be inaccessible between the hours of 7.30am and 6pm, from the junction with Emery Lane to the junction with Common Slip.

The council has warned that delays in the area will be likely during the works.

A closure notice said: “Access will be maintained for residents and businesses where possible, although delays are likely due to the nature of the works.

“The Order will have a maximum duration of 18 months.”

The completion date of the works will be dependent on weather conditions.

St Mary Street is often a busy area for drivers seeking to park on the road and access the town centre, causing some issues for residents.

Many have claimed that the number of vehicles using the route has made it difficult for them to park near their homes.

Last year a request to introduce residents-only parking restrictions on the route was rejected.

Councillors feared the restrictions would push parking issues out to the edge of the town.
